Introduction
Kepion + Power BI allows you to set new targets, run what-if scenarios and make better decisions for maximizing your company’s performance.
We have updated the Integrated Financial Planning application with two dashboards for Power BI demo. To create your own Kepion + Power BI demo environment, please follow the steps below.
Before We Begin
Note: To embed a Power BI report in the Kepion dashboard, Power BI Pro is required. Please make sure you have a valid license.
Please make sure you have installed and configured the following components before moving forward.
- Power BI Desktop
- Power BI Data Gateway (required to connect to SSAS)

Download the following assets from the Kepion Resource Center.
- Sample Apps -> 01-Integrated_Financial_Planning_App.zip
- Sample Apps -> 02-Integrated_Financial_Planning_App (Power BI Reports).zip
Prepare the Kepion Application
Unzip 01-Integrated_Financial_Planning_App.zip and restore the database to your Kepion environment.
Deploy the application from the Kepion Modeler.
Prepare the Power BI Service
Open https://app.powerbi.com/ and log in.
Go to Manage gateways, select the target gateway cluster, and then click ADD DATA SOURCE.
Enter connection information for the Integrated Financial Planning SSAS database.
Then click the Add button. If the connection is successful, you will see a message below the Data Source Settings.
Click Users. Verify if the required user is on this list. If not, enter their email address and click Add.
Note: If your environment is joined with Azure AD, then you can skip the Map user names step.
Then check the newly added user, and click Map user names.
- Replace: The email address that you use to sign in to Power BI.
- With: The login that you use to connect to SSAS cube.

Prepare the Power BI Reports
Unzip 02-Integrated_Financial_Planning_App (Power BI Reports).zip. Follow the steps to edit the report data source.
Open one of the Power BI report. If this is the first time you open the Power BI reports that connect to Kepion sample application, you may see the following message.
Click Edit to change the connection string.
- Server: Update it to the SQL instance where the Kepion sample application Integrated Financial Planning is restored.
- Database: Ensure the database name is Integrated Financial Planning.
When you are done, click OK.
On the next screen, select the cube, then click OK. Below is a summary of how each Power BI report is connected to the underlying cube.

Publish the Power BI Reports
Click the Publish button to publish the reports to your Power BI Service. This will allow multiple users to access it online or from mobile devices.
On the next screen, select the destination you would like to publish these reports on Power BI. Then click Select.
It may take a few seconds to publish. Once it's done, you will get a confirmation message.
Update the URL of the Embedded Power BI Reports
Once the reports are available on Power BI Service, you can get a link of each report and embed it on a Kepion dashboard.
Open https://app.powerbi.com/ and log in.
Navigate to a report, e.g. Enterprise Reports. On the top menu, click ... -> Embed -> Website or portal.
Copy the code from the first text box, and click Close.
Open Kepion on a separate browser tab.
Under Kepion Modeler, navigate to the dashboard Power BI - Revenue Planning.
On the page Enterprise Reports, click the gear icon of the Content component.
Update the link you just copied from Power BI Service to the text box. Click OK and Save the dashboard.
Below is a summary of how Power BI reports are referenced in the Kepion dashboard.
